Beth Mead has hit back at a Guardian article which claimed that her comments on the lack of diversity in the England squad were ‘unfair’ and ‘not representative of my values.’ She has since withdrawn from the squad because of family commitments.
Beth Mead’s comments about diversity in the Lionesses squad ‘not a true reflection’ of her values
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has spoken to Beth Mead in the wake of her comments about England’s lack of diversity in the squad. She said the make up of the squad was coincidental. She added: “We need to do more to improve our diversity.”

Despite this, Mead has since withdrawn from the squad due to family reasons. The England captain, who won her 50th cap in the recent match against Japan, will now be unable to play in the next match. This will open up the opportunity for other players, including Lauren James and Ebony Salmon. Meanwhile, Rachel Daly was switched to right back against Japan. But despite the news, Mead could still get a chance to play in the next game, against Norway.
The Lionesses have a history of diversity in the team. The team recently wrote to the government to get more girls involved in sport. While there are some women in the squad of all backgrounds, the majority of players are white, which means that the Lionesses are missing out on diversity.
Mead has said the lack of diversity in the Lionesses squad is not a personal issue, but a systemic problem. “We need more diversity to be able to improve equality in the sport,” said the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.
Beth Mead defends herself over ‘unfair’ article
The England women’s team has faced criticism over the lack of ethnic diversity in their squad. England have won the Euro 2022 tournament with a team which consists of mainly white players. Only three of the squad’s players are of mixed heritage. In comparison, the Women’s Super League has between ten and fifteen percent players of minority ethnic background. In fact, this figure is higher than in the Premier League.
While Mead is on lockdown, she does manage to keep in touch with fans through her social media accounts. She shares her workout routines and baking experiments with fans. She also promotes her #TrainAtHome video series. And she isn’t the only one who has been impacted by the article.
The ‘unfair’ article was published on the website of an English women’s football team. Mead has been a key part of England’s success in the World Cup. In June, she assisted Ellen White’s goal in the World Cup semi-final, and on September 2, she was named PFA Fan’s Player of the Month. She has also represented England at all levels since she was under 15 years old.
The ‘unfair’ article has caused controversy and has forced Mead to defend herself. Her UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 triumph helped her win the UEFA Women’s Footballer of the Year award. She won the award ahead of Chelsea striker Sam Kerr and Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas.
