When you’re a blogger, it’s tempting to want to focus all of your attention on your writing. After all, blogs are all about the written word- right? However, while your writing is important, it’s not the only thing that you need to consider as a blogger. Images are what will grab the reader’s attention, draw them in and really bring your words to life. Here are some of the ways you can improve your imagery, and in turn improve your blog.
Buy a Good Camera
Smartphones can take fantastic pictures in the right light, and if you can’t afford a fancy camera, you can certainly snap some great images on your phone if you’re patient. However, if you’re able to make the investment, a DSLR camera will allow you to capture the best photos. Changing the iso, shutter speed, and other various settings will give you complete control over your photos. Not only is this great for your blog, but you can also capture incredible images to use on Instagram as well as to use for your own personal albums. Subjects like pets and kids that move around a lot are difficult to snap on a phone camera. You can get perfect photos on a good quality camera. Use Youtube tutorials or book a beginners DSLR day course to get to grip with all of the features. And keep practicing!
Learn How To Edit
Taking a great picture is just the first step. Knowing how to edit will really help them to stand out and take images from good to great. Even if it’s just a little cropping and brightening, even the best photos work well with a little touching up. You could play around with saturation and temperature settings, remove any blemishes or imperfections and other edits too with the right know how. Photoshop is possibly the best tool for the job, but as a complex piece of software again going to a beginners course will help you get to grips with the basics.
Use Stock Images
Sometimes it’s not possible or practical to get the image you want for your blog post. Perhaps you need a photo of a landmark in a different country or a picture of a model in a particular pose. There are a hundred reasons why you might not be able to capture the photo you need yourself. In this case, using stock images is the way to go. You will have access to a huge number of photos in any subject you want, and can either pay per image or for a subscription to download them. These can them be used in your work.
Don’t underestimate the importance of great photos in your blog posts. No matter how well written your articles are, low-quality, fuzzy and photos that haven’t been taken with care could well be enough to put people off. When you spend so long perfecting your writing, you don’t want to be turning visitors off with these kinds of mistakes.
